Five-Year Results of Cytyc's MammoSite(R) Radiation Therapy System Presented at ASBS Annual Meeting
MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(HSMN NewsFeed)--Cytyc Corporation (Nasdaq: CYTC ), a leading provider of surgical and diagnostic products targeting women's health and cancer diagnostics, today announced that five-year follow-up results for the initial clinical trial of the MammoSite® Radiation Therapy System (RTS) were presented at the 8th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS).The study, presented by Pamela Benitez, M.D., of William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, was conducted at multiple institutions across the United States. Qualified patients with early-stage breast cancer were prospectively enrolled and treated using the MammoSite RTS as the sole modality for delivering accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI). From May 2000 to October 2001, forty-three patients completed APBI with MammoSite RTS and to date, thirty-six remain in the study. The author reported that five years after treatment, "No local recurrences, either at the tumor bed or elsewhere in the breast have occurred. No contralateral cancers have developed." The author also reported that cosmetic outcomes, rated as good to excellent, were achieved in 83.3 percent of the study patients.
Dr. Benitez concluded, "MammoSite balloon brachytherapy as a sole modality for delivering radiation to the tumor bed has been successful in achieving excellent local control in the initial clinical trial of patients with early-stage invasive ductal breast cancer."
The study also evaluated patient acceptance of the procedure. Survey results showed that 100 percent of patients said they would recommend MammoSite brachytherapy to a friend or family member and all patients said they would use MammoSite brachytherapy again if they had to do it over.
"I'm truly thankful MammoSite was an option for me at the time of my diagnosis as it helped ease my mind about exposing my heart and lungs to radiation, and I could complete treatment in five days," said Janice Smith, 69, of Pembroke Pines, Florida, who received MammoSite in August 2001, as part of this study. "Six years after my treatment, I'm cancer-free and grateful that MammoSite allowed me to get back to my normal life and the things and people I love faster."
"During the past five years, MammoSite RTS has become the most widely-accepted form of partial breast irradiation," said Martin Keisch, M.D., Radiation Oncologist and principal investigator of the clinical trial. "These results are impressive and further illustrate the efficacy of MammoSite RTS in the treatment of early-stage breast cancer patients."
"Since its introduction in 2002, more than 35,000 breast cancer patients have received partial breast irradiation utilizing the MammoSite RTS," said Ellen Sheets, M.D., Cytyc's chief medical officer. "The five-year follow-up data should be very reassuring to patients and physicians as they consider treatment options for early-stage breast cancer."
